Ok, The Usual Suspects starring Kevin Spacey was a great movie.... but not the subject of today's blog post.

You walk into your favorite grocery store… and suddenly nothing is where it used to be.

The bread? Gone.

The milk? Moved.

Your patience? Also gone.

And somehow, this small change feels bigger than it should.

It’s funny how something so simple can completely throw us off. We had a system. A rhythm. We knew exactly where to go, what to grab, and how to get out in record time. And now? We’re wandering aisles like it’s our first visit.

But maybe it’s not really about the grocery store.

The Little Changes That Aren’t So Little

Life is full of these moments.

Gas prices jump overnight.

The weather goes from sunshine to “why did I put my winter coat away?”

Roads you’ve driven for years suddenly have detours.

None of these are life-altering on their own… but together, they disrupt something we don’t often think about—our comfort in the familiar.

We like knowing what to expect.

And Then There Are the Bigger Changes

A new job.A growing family.Kids moving out… or sometimes moving back in.The decision to move, downsize, upsize, or start fresh somewhere new.

These are the changes that don’t just shift your routine—they shift your world.

And right in the middle of it all is something we hold onto tightly… home.

Because home is where we try to create a sense of stability when everything else feels like it’s moving.

The “Usual Suspects”

And then there are the people.

You know the ones.

Your “usual suspects.”The friends you don’t have to plan with—you just end up together. The ones you grab dinner with, run errands with, laugh with over absolutely nothing.

They become part of your daily rhythm without you even realizing it.

Until something changes.

Schedules shift.

Life gets busy.Someone moves.

Or life simply takes everyone in slightly different directions.

And suddenly, those everyday moments you didn’t think twice about… become the ones you miss the most.

Why Change Feels So Hard

It’s not just the big things.

It’s the loss of the familiar.

The routines.

The people.

The predictability.

Change forces us to adjust, to think, to step out of autopilot.

Ever wonder why even small changes can feel so disorienting? It turns out our brains are wired to favor the familiar — but they're also remarkably capable of adapting, if we give them the chance.

And sometimes the discomfort isn’t because something is wrong…it’s just because something is different.

But Here’s the Thing About Change

It also makes room.

Room for new routines.

New favorite places.

New connections.

New versions of ourselves we didn’t expect.

And while nothing ever replaces the “usual suspects,” life has a way of introducing new ones—sometimes when we least expect it.

A Little Closer to Home

In real estate, I see this every day.

People aren’t just buying or selling a home—they’re navigating change.

A new chapter.

A fresh start.

A necessary shift.

And it’s never just about the house. It’s about everything that comes with it—the memories, the routines, the people, and the hope for what’s next.

Final Thought

So the next time the grocery store rearranges everything…

Take a breath.

Smile (eventually).

Because if we can survive that kind of chaos, we can probably handle whatever bigger changes life throws our way.

And who knows…

You might just find a new favorite aisle—and maybe even a few new “usual suspects” along the way.

Because home isn’t just a place… it’s how we move through life.
